In the pursuit of positive change, JAAGO Foundation joined hands with MBM Group to embark on a transformative journey to enhance Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) conditions across 11 districts of Bangladesh. This comprehensive initiative, titled ‘Wash For Community’, spanning from Dhaka to Bandarban, aims to empower communities and instil essential knowledge about WASH practices.
The campaign’s primary activities are focused towards elevating awareness and understanding of WASH principles among students, parents, teachers, and community members, thereby creating a tangible difference in the well-being of the community. The project is aligned with SDG Goals 6 and 3—Clean water, sanitation, and good health for all. The project unfolded in three distinct segments: Capacity Building Training for Students, Teachers, and Local Volunteers; Community Sensitization by reaching out to parents and community members; and WASH Infrastructure Development across all 11 schools of JAAGO Foundation.
To disseminate knowledge about WASH, JAAGO Foundation designed a comprehensive training module catering to diverse age groups and backgrounds. Local youth volunteers and teachers underwent intensive training on WASH, equipping them to further educate students and communities. The training covered essential topics, including hygiene, sanitation, and water-borne diseases. Trained teachers imparted WASH knowledge to students and their parents, emphasising the practical applications of hygiene practices in daily life. A total of 157 training sessions engaged 4,716 participants, including 4,050 students, 435 parents, 110 teachers, 44 school staff, and 77 volunteers.
Community intervention, facilitated by Volunteer for Bangladesh, reached the grassroots level with WASH knowledge materials, disseminating information through one-to-one conversations and distributing content materials. A remarkable 13,000 people were directly reached through volunteer activation who, until this campaign, did not have access to such essential information for maintaining proper health and hygiene.
Infrastructural improvements included the installation of water filtration systems and tube wells, ensuring safe drinking water for students and communities. The project constructed safe and hygienic toilets across 11 schools of JAAGO Foundation to ensure safe sanitation for students and teachers. Handwashing stations were also strategically placed across schools to promote regular hand hygiene practices among students. A forthcoming initiative involves the installation of reusable sanitary napkin dispensers in schools, aiming to address the menstrual health needs of adolescent girls.
WASH and drinking water initiatives in schools have directly improved the lives of 4,807 beneficiaries, encompassing students, teachers, and school staff. The ripple effect extends further, with an estimated 14,533 additional community members benefiting daily from enhanced drinking water facilities. The impact of this campaign resonates strongly among beneficiaries, who express sincere gratitude for the transformative change it has brought to their daily lives. Acknowledging the positive outcomes, this initiative stands as a beacon for positive change, fostering healthier and more sustainable communities.
As we reflect on the successful execution of this impactful project, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to MBM Group for their unwavering support. Beyond WASH, MBM Group has been providing school uniforms for the students of JAAGO. These uniforms go beyond mere clothing; they become symbols of inclusivity and community, fostering a shared identity among students. Their contribution directly impacts the well-being and self-esteem of these young learners, creating an environment where they feel supported, accepted, and ready to embrace their educational journey with confidence. MBM’s longstanding commitment to the well-being of our students highlights a shared dedication to holistic education.
This partnership exemplifies the potential for positive transformation when organisations join forces for a shared goal. JAAGO Foundation and MBM Group, collaboratively, are dedicated to fostering a community that is not only healthier but also well-informed and empowered. Their collaborative efforts symbolise a commitment to creating a lasting impact, shaping a future where generations to come can thrive.
