Donate Zakat: Purify wealth, ensure social justice and transform lives

Zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, is an obligatory act of charity aimed at purifying one’s wealth and support those in need. Zakat holds the power to eradicate poverty, promote social justice, uplift lives and empower futures.

As a muslim, it is our utmost duty to pay Zakat. In order to do so, we must understand who is eligible to pay Zakat, when should it be paid and how to calculate the Nisab amount (minimum threshold of wealth).

Who is Eligible to Pay Zakat?

Zakat is obligatory for Muslims who meet the following conditions:

  1. Adult and Sane – The individual must be of sound mind and have reached puberty.
  2. Possess Wealth Above the Nisab – The person must own wealth exceeding the Nisab threshold, which is 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, whichever is lower.
  3. Complete Ownership – The wealth should be in the person’s full control, meaning it is accessible for use.
  4. One Lunar Year Must Pass – The wealth must remain above the Nisab level for a complete lunar year.

If a person fulfills these conditions, they become eligible to pay Zakat.

When to Pay Zakat?

Zakat is due once every Islamic year when a person’s wealth has been above the Nisab threshold for a continuous lunar year. Many Muslims prefer to pay during Ramadan for increased blessings, but it can be given at any time within the year.

How to Calculate the Nisab Amount?

The Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must own before they become eligible for paying Zakat. It is based on the value of:

  • 87.48 grams of gold or
  • 612.36 grams of silver

Since gold is more expensive, many scholars recommend using the silver standard for a more inclusive approach. The Nisab value fluctuates based on market rates. To calculate, check the current price of gold or silver and multiply by the respective weight.

Once the Nisab is determined, Zakat is 2.5% of total eligible wealth (cash, savings, shares and investments, trade goods, property held as investments, other income etc.).

By fulfilling this duty, Muslims contribute to shaping a more just and compassionate society, ensuring that wealth circulates fairly among all members of the community.
