On June 8, 2024, JAAGO Foundation, in collaboration with Volunteer for Bangladesh, American Spaces of Bangladesh, and Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited, successfully organized the “Pedal for Planet” cycle rally.
This grand event, held to commemorate World Environment Day, took place across eight divisions of Bangladesh, starting in Chattogram on June 5 and including Dhaka on June 8.
The primary objective of the “Pedal for Planet” cycle rally was to emphasize the significance of environmental stewardship and collective action in combating climate change. By bringing together youths and community members from different regions, the event sought to promote sustainable practices, highlight the impact of carbon emissions, and encourage a greener lifestyle.
The rally kicked off at 7:00 am with registration and assembly at the starting points in each division and saw the participation of over 1000 individuals from eight divisions of Bangladesh. It was overwhelming to see so many people unite for such a great cause.
The Honourable Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, Mr Atiqul Islam, graced the Dhaka rally as the Chief Guest, joining participants as they pedal towards a greener tomorrow. His presence underscored the importance of environmental stewardship and community involvement in addressing climate change.
“As citizens of an independent country, we must fulfil our responsibilities; we must love our city and our country. To showcase this love, we need to think and act not only for our own benefit but for the benefit of all. We must refrain from polluting the environment, avoid filling up rivers, refrain from occupying playgrounds, and not destroy forests to build structures. Always remember, this city, and this country is ours, and it is our responsibility to keep it well.”, said Mr Atiqul Islam, Honourable Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation.
Mr Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Honourable Mayor of Khulna City Corporation joined the Khulna Rally as the Chief Guest and emphasized the importance of protecting our environment. His presence truly uplifted the spirit of the participants of the rally.
Babar Ali, the proud Bangladeshi mountaineer who recently climbed Mount Everest, joined the participants in the Chattogram rally and shared motivational words with the youth, recounting his journey and emphasizing the significance of perseverance and dedication to achieving one’s goals.
“Leave no trace. Take only photographs, and leave only footprints- we should remember this saying wherever we go. It’s not enough to just keep the Himalayas clean; we need to keep our cities and country clean as well.”, said Babar Ali.
He also mentioned that cycling is an environment-friendly mode of transportation that does not use fossil fuels. It is an economical vehicle. He hopes that wherever we go, we remember to leave no trace and only the footprints.
Korvi Rakshand, Founder and Executive Director of JAAGO Foundation also joined the Dhaka rally and cycled along with the participants. Sharing his experience he said, “It’s truly inspiring to see so many people come together for one cause. I believe it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to raise awareness about climate change and pollution and do our part to protect our planet. Remember, every little step counts. Ride a bicycle, plant a tree, recycle- together, we can shape a better future for generations to come.”
As a token of appreciation, the participants were given a certificate that will serve as a reminder of the steps they took today to shape a sustainable tomorrow and motivate them to continue this journey in the days to come.
The “Pedal for Planet” cycle rally was a resounding success, demonstrating the power of unity and community involvement in addressing climate change. By raising awareness about environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices, JAAGO Foundation and its partners have taken a significant step towards a brighter, more sustainable future. Together, we can protect our planet and ensure a healthier environment for generations to come.
