Volunteers to the Rescue Fire in BM Container Depot in Sitakunda Chattogram

We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life of at least 49 people, including nine fire services professionals, from a fire and explosion at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda, Bangladesh, on 4 June 2022. The BM Container depot in Sitakunda of Chattogram, where over 600 workers are employed, caught fire. Many rivers around the site of the tragedy had run out of water as fire service personnel were literally putting their lives at stake to extinguish the fire.

Till now, JAAGO Foundation volunteers have been working tirelessly to provide emergency services to the injured. In the aftermath of the accident, VBD Chattogram volunteers helped stabilise the heinous situation of the burned victims. A group of 15 volunteers initially joined hands to help the victim. They accumulated data on victims of the incident and assisted in emergencies where required. The victims’ families are also being looked after to surpass the trauma of the event their respective family members have fallen victim to. The volunteers were responsible for arranging medical necessities such as food, medicine etc. The victims and their families were also provided food to endure such challenging times.

One victim’s family travelled from Habiganj to Chattogram in search of their missing family member. Volunteers of VBD Chattogram got information from members of the VBD Habiganj district about the family and helped them connect to their affected family members.

With your assistance, volunteers were able to ensure that the victims and their families could get back to their lives as soon as possible.
